Chapter Eleven

Edward groaned as he sat on the bench then bent over to untie his boots. He let one then the other drop. After wiggling his toes, he contemplated standing up again. Hunter held out his hand.

“I’ll help you up. You’ll have to show me where the dog food is, so I can feed them.” Hunter squinted at him. “Why didn’t they follow us over to the training center?”

“I trained them to stay over here once I moved. Some of the horses—and clients—don’t like dogs. The ones here don’t have a problem with them, so I keep them here. Don’t want to upset anyone.” Edward reached down to scratch Dudley’s ear. “I never understood why people think pitbulls are dangerous. As long as they’re trained right, they wouldn’t hurt anyone.”

Hunter patted Ellie’s head before moving into the kitchen. “Unfortunately, not all of them are trained by the right kind of people. Yours are pretty well behaved.”

After dropping onto the stool, Edward pointed to a cupboard in the mudroom. “The food is in there and their dishes are in the cabinet next to it. They get two scoops each. Dudley’s is blue. While you’re doing that, I’ll pull the steaks out and go fire up the grill.”

“Wait. Do you have any painkillers? Maybe you should take one.” Hunter shook his head when Edward started to speak. “Just to take the edge off.”

“I have some over-the-counter stuff that’ll work.” He laughed as Hunter simply stared at him. “There’s a bottle in the cupboard next to the sink. If you want to get me two pills and a glass of water, I’ll take them.”

Hunter did as Edward said before he fed the dogs. After taking the pills, Edward headed out to the veranda, where he got the grill going. He wandered back into the kitchen to see Hunter pulling the steaks out of the fridge.

“There’s fixings for a salad and broccoli as a side if you want to make them up.” He seasoned the steaks and let them sit for a minute. Propping his hip against the counter, he watched Hunter chop up vegetables and lettuce. After a few minutes, he returned to the grill.

“Here’s some iced tea. You probably shouldn’t be drinking alcohol right now.” Hunter gave him a glass. “The salad’s done and the broccoli’s steaming. It’ll be ready when the steaks are. I’d like mine medium rare, please.”

Edward said, “Is there any other way to eat it?”

Sipping the tea, he kept an eye on their food as Hunter wandered to the edge of the veranda to stare out over the large lawn leading to the wooden fences of the paddocks.

“How can you stand to leave this place?” Hunter shot him a glance from over his shoulder. “It’s so beautiful and peaceful.”

“There are days when it’s hard to leave, but then I think about how much I enjoy competing and that I need to make money to keep all of this.” Edward took the steaks off, setting them on the plate. They went back inside to the table.
